You have the right to feel well

According to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, you have the right to be healthy, have sufficient nutritious food, be covered by social security, have an adequate standard of living and live in a healthy and safe environment – in general, to feel well.

Your parents or other guardians must ensure that these rights are fulfilled. If your parents are unable to care for you, the State must intervene and offer you care and protection.

What does this mean?

If you become ill, you have the right to receive care and attention and, if necessary, medical treatment. For you to feel well, you must have healthy, nutritious food and sufficient opportunities to sleep, exercise, take part in recreational activities and spend time outdoors. Even if the boundaries set by your parents or guardians can sometimes feel frustrating, you need their care and protection to feel well and to grow and develop in a safe environment.
When you feel sad, anxious or worried, you are entitled to help and support from a trusted adult – they have a responsibility to help you. Sometimes professional counselling may also be required.

Wellbeing also includes small, everyday things: closeness, safety and hugs.
